GHG
ACCOUNTING

GHG accounting refers to the process of quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with an organization’s activities.

This involves measuring, monitoring, and calculating emissions of various greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), which contribute to climate change.

GHG accounting provides valuable insights into an organization’s carbon footprint and helps identify opportunities to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change.

ISO 14064

ISO 14064 is a set of international standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that provides guidelines and principles for GHG accounting and verification. ISO 14064 consists of three parts:

ISO 14064-1: Specification with Guidance at the Organization Level for Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals: This part of the standard provides guidance for organizations on how to quantify, monitor, report, and verify their GHG emissions and removals. It covers the principles and requirements for preparing GHG inventories, including organizational boundaries, emission sources, emission factors, and data management.

ISO 14064-2: Specification with Guidance at the Project Level for Quantification, Monitoring, and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions or Removal Enhancements: This part of the standard focuses on GHG accounting for specific projects or activities aimed at reducing emissions or enhancing removals. It provides guidance on baseline setting, project monitoring, emission quantification, and reporting for activities such as renewable energy projects, energy efficiency initiatives, and reforestation projects.

ISO 14064-3: Specification with Guidance for the Validation and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Assertions: This part of the standard outlines the requirements and procedures for validating and verifying GHG assertions, including GHG inventories, emission reduction projects, and GHG statements. It establishes principles for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and transparency of GHG data and assertions through independent validation and verification processes.

ISO 14064 certification involves demonstrating compliance with the requirements of the ISO 14064 standard through a formal certification process conducted by accredited certification bodies. Organizations can seek ISO 14064 certification to validate the accuracy and credibility of their GHG accounting practices and enhance their credibility with stakeholders, including customers, investors, regulators, and the public.

Certification can also help organizations demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability leadership.
